Kansas Stories: Jaime
“My name is Jaime, and I am the father and provider of my home. I have three children
and I live with my wife in Kansas City, Kansas. We are a united family and take great care of each other. Family is everything to me; I long to live to see my children grow up healthy and well, together with my beautiful wife.
“Even though my children have Medicaid, as a father I do not qualify because of my
income. To qualify, I would have to stop working or earn close to nothing, which is impossible to meet our household expenses with children.
“Not having health insurance has impacted me a lot; it has been a great stress on my health. As a Latino, I prefer to use home remedies rather than having to pay a lot of hospital expenses that can be costly. That impacts my health because I don’t get the proper treatment that I need. When I was young, I made some bad decisions and I was shot in the head, which affected my entire right side. My nerves are stiff, and I can’t feel heat or cold on my left side. I have learned to live with my conditions, but if I had health insurance, a lot would change for me.
“If Medicaid expands in Kansas, dads like me would qualify for health coverage. I could find the right specialists to see about my conditions and nerve damage. I would not be so stressed because I could say that I have my insurance and I would not have to worry. If I could speak to the legislators making the decisions about Medicaid expansion, I would tell them to put themselves in my shoes. It’s not easy living without health insurance and having to avoid treatment because you don’t have the money to pay for it. We work hard to create a good life and we contribute a lot to our state. Just as they need us for a strong economy, we also need them to help us access medical coverage to be healthier.”

“Mi nombre es Jaime y soy el padre y proveedor de mi hogar. Tengo tres hijos y vivo con mi esposa en Kansas City, Kansas. Somos una familia unida y nos cuidamos mucho una a otro. La familia es todo para mí; yo anhelo vivir a ver mis hijos crecer bien y sanos, junto a mi linda esposa.
“A pesar de que mis hijos tienen Medicaid, yo como papá no califico por mi ingreso. Para calificar, tendría que dejar de trabajar o ganar casi nada al mes, y eso no se puede con los gastos de la casa y los hijos. Me ha impactado mucho no tener un seguro médico; ha sido un estrés muy grande para mi salud. Como Latino, prefiero usar remedios caseros en lugar de tener que pagar muchos gastos del hospital que pueden ser altos. Eso impacta mi salud porque no agarro el tratamiento adecuado que necesito. Cuando yo era joven, andaba en malos pasos y me dieron un balazo en la cabeza, afectando mi lado derecho. Tengo los nervios encogidos y en mi lado izquierdo no siento el calor ni el frio. He aprendido vivir con mis condiciones, pero si tuviera seguro médico, cambiaría mucho para mí.
“Si Medicaid expande en Kansas, papás como yo calificarían para cobertura médica. Podría buscar a los especialistas adecuados para ver sobre mis condiciones y los nervios. No estaría tan estresado porque podría decir que tengo mi seguro médico y no me tendría que preocupar. Si tuviera a los legisladores que toman las decisiones en expandir el Medicaid, yo les diría que se pongan en mi lugar. No es fácil vivir sin seguro médico y evitar tratamiento por no tener el dinero de pagarlo. Trabajamos mucho para salir adelante y contribuimos mucho al estado. Así como necesitan de nosotros para tener una buena economía, también nosotros necesitamos de ellos, para que nos ayuden a tener cobertura médica y estar más sanos.”
